Dental Exam Red Deer

Introduction

Why Are Dental Exams And Cleanings Essential?

Dental exams and cleanings are essential because they help in maintaining maximum oral health.

A dental exam usually includes a comprehensive visual examination of your teeth and your soft tissues. We may also take x-rays to detect issues not visible to the naked eye.

During a dental exam, the dentist will examine your face for any swellings and feel your lymph nodes to ensure there’s no infection. They will check your jaws for any pain during opening and closing. After that, the dentist will inspect the soft tissues inside your mouth like your tongue and cheeks, followed by your teeth and gums. Finally, dental x-rays might be taken.

After a dental exam, your dentist may recommend you to get some fillings done or sometimes they will schedule cleaning appointments for you.

A full dental exam usually takes around 40 minutes to one hour.

No, dental exams are not painful.

What Is The Difference Between A Dental Exam And A Cleaning?

In a cleaning, a hygienist will thoroughly clean all your teeth. In contrast, during a dental exam, a dentist will examine all your teeth as well as your soft tissues, and may also take x-rays.

Dental exams and cleanings should typically be scheduled every six months.

A dentist can detect cavities by examining your teeth and taking x-rays. These x-rays can reveal the presence of cavities and indicate how deep they are.

Dentists can detect cavities during the first visit if they are not very deep. In cases where the cavities are deep and a root canal is needed, another appointment may need to be scheduled.

A dentist can determine if a root canal is necessary by asking you questions and checking for signs and symptoms such as pain, abscess, and facial swelling. X-rays can also reveal if tooth decay has penetrated deeply into your tooth and if there is an infection in your bone.

No special preparations are needed for a dental exam. However, a detailed medical history is required, so please bring a list of any medications you are currently taking.
